Swiss Research and Innovation at a Crossroads
A rapid finalisation of the Swiss negotiation mandate and the start of formal negotiations could already trigger access for Swiss-based researchers to the ERC Advanced Grant 2024 call opening on 29 May. If the negotiations progress smoothly, full association would then be possible for the 2025 calls.
In the meantime, Third Country status applies and the 2024 Work Programmes are in full swing. The 2024 financial guarantee from the State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation covers the costs of successful Swiss-based applicants in Horizon Europe projects. Complemented by the national transitional measures, this support limits the erosion of Switzerland’s competitiveness and maintains its integration in the European research community.
2024 will also be a year of political change in the European Union. A new parliament will be elected in June, with a new European Commission in autumn. The subsequent new political priorities will influence the objectives of the calls in the last years of Horizon Europe. Finally, various evaluations of Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe will be collected and the first lessons learned may translate into pilots in the last work programmes of Horizon Europe, paving the way for the 10th Framework Programme.
The year promises to be packed with, hopefully significant, changes! The Euresearch advisors are committed to informing and advising you along the way. Let the journey begin!
