Unlocking the Potential of European Partnerships for Research and Innovation
European Partnerships align strategically with the EU's overarching priorities, including the Green Deal, Europe's digital strategy, and pandemic preparedness. They are collaborative research and innovation programmes funded by the EU Commission and both private and public partners. However, these partnerships are not solely focused on scientific discovery; they also bridge the divide between research and policy needs, foster synergies with national and regional initiatives, and mobilise a diverse array of innovation stakeholders. This approach ensures that research outcomes translate into tangible socio-economic benefits. There are 3 types of partnerships, each with specific objectives and funding mechanisms.
Recently, the European Commission introduced 10 proposals for new candidate partnerships (in addition to the existing 48), spanning critical domains like brain health, sustainable forestry, and innovative materials for the EU. The final selection and formalisation will be a collaborative process, integrated into the 2025-2027 Strategic Plan.
Switzerland provides funding to participate in numerous partnership calls, thereby enabling Swiss-based institutions to actively contribute to these initiatives.
