EU Missions – A New Way to Bring Concrete Solutions to Some of Our Greatest Challenges
The Missions combine research and innovation with new forms of governance, collaboration and citizen engagement. This last element is key to their success. The Missions are supposed to not only bring tangible benefits to Europe, but also to engage citizens in the design, implementation and monitoring of the projects.
5 Missions were defined and aim to provide concrete solutions by 2030: Adaptation to Climate Change, Cancer, 100 Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities, Restore our Ocean and Waters, A Soil Deal for Europe. Each Mission issues calls for large-scale cross-disciplinary projects. The preparation phase is now complete and the EU Missions are being implemented, with the first collaborative projects up and running. Swiss research institutes, higher education establishments, SMEs and other entities bring their expertise to all 5 Missions and are currently involved in 16 projects, some in more than one. They receive funding directly from the State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI). One of the projects, AI4SoilHealth, involves 4 different Swiss entities. Therefore, if you are still having any doubts: Yes, Swiss entities can be part of Mission projects!
Participating in EU Mission projects is a meaningful way to support Europe’s transformation into a greener, healthier, more inclusive and resilient continent. Calls are currently open for 4 Missions: Climate, Cities, Ocean, and Soil, with a total budget of over €330 million and deadlines in September 2023. If you are interested in preparing a proposal, the Euresearch Network is happy to assist you.
