Health Funding Opportunities in Horizon Europe? There are so many!
Health is a priority for all of us and European funding for health research is crucial for tackling major public health challenges. Horizon Europe Cluster 1 Health provides essential resources to address EU health priorities and ensure a healthier future. The draft Work Programme for 2025 is already online, offering researchers and innovators the opportunity to plan and form consortia for successful submissions to the deadline in September 2025.
The official call will be published in May, with an info day and brokerage event hosted by the European Commission and National Contact Points for Health. Topics for 2025 include intellectual disabilities, health impact of pollution, microplastics, mental health, infectious diseases, AI in healthcare and biomedical research, and medical devices. Early preparation will give you a competitive edge. Join one of our info events in the coming weeks. The 2026-2027 Work Programme is also in development and will launch at the end of 2025.
Two other important EU funding opportunities among many in the field of health include:
The European and Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP), with a total budget of €1.86 billion (2021-2027), funds clinical research, research capacity development, and networking to accelerate the development of effective, safe, accessible, affordable, and digital medical interventions for poverty-related infectious diseases affecting sub-Saharan Africa. The EDCTP also funds overarching topics such as the effect of climate change on these diseases. The next call is expected in late 2025.
The Innovative Health Initiative (IHI) offers total funding of €2.4 billion (2021-2027) to improve healthcare quality and patient safety, in collaboration with industry stakeholders. IHI calls cover topics from pharmaceuticals and biotechnology to medical technology and big data. Projects focus, for example, on the discovery, development and testing of new molecules and mechanisms of action or on the development of methodologies for the assessment of safety and health outcomes. New calls are planned soon.
