New Horizons for Swiss Innovators – EIC Accelerator and STEP Scale Up Calls
The possibility for Swiss organisations to participate in Horizon Europe EIC Accelerator and Strategic Technologies for Europe Platform (STEP) Scale Up calls as beneficiaries from 2025 marks a significant milestone for Swiss innovators.
The EIC Accelerator aims to support start-ups and SMEs develop and scale up breakthrough innovations. It is open to high-impact innovations across all sectors, with specific challenges focusing on advanced materials, biotechnology, space technologies, generative AI, and future mobility. When Switzerland last participated in 2020, it ranked fourth, securing €98.2 million for 26 companies.
On offer is a grant component of up to €2.5 million and an investment component of €0.5-10 million. Coaching, mentoring and networking opportunities are also provided. The total budget for 2025 is €634 million, with €384 million for open calls and €250 million for the specific challenges.
Complementing the existing EIC Accelerator is the new EIC STEP Scale Up scheme. It aims to catalyse significant funding rounds to scale up breakthrough innovations in digital technologies, clean tech, and biotech. By supporting high-impact innovation in these strategic technologies, the EU intends to enhance its economic and technological competitiveness.
With a budget of €300 million in 2025, STEP Scale Up targets individual start-ups, SMEs, and investors. It provides equity of up to €30 million to be co-invested alongside outside investors, facilitating larger growth-stage rounds of €50-150 million.
